The Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, the RM Sotheby's auction, the Quail — these are not separate events. "He drove himself. A 1991 Porsche 964, Guards Red, the way it came from Stuttgart. He parked it in the public lot and walked in. At the Quail, a man in a navy cashmere blazer — the kind that costs more than most people's cars — asked him about the coat he was wearing. He described the wool: a 16-micron merino from a single farm in New South Wales, woven in Yorkshire, cut in London. The man said nothing for a moment. Then: 'I want one.' He said: 'I know. Let's talk next week.'"
